CICADAS LAMENT

Arriving mid-August, they occupy the high places
their droning cacophony an energetic mating competition.
Like last-call at the bar, they hurry to consummate their one crucial moment.
(4 Minutes)

Meanwhile
The Zen Wedding last Monday was Wonderful, but I posted the few photographs on Face book and have no other access since I then, foolishly, deleted them from the camera. However I did make two sets of hard copy and left them at the Zendo Wednesday while some of us stayed after meditation to accomplish a mailing for the Annual Gala, so might be able to rephotograph them.
This was read:

Kindness
Naomi Shihab Nye

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

Fulfillment and Harvest
August is saturated by Joy and sadness, Injustice and the struggle for justice, Wild fires and floods. Some of it due to the horrendous decisions of the current Administration, the myriad tragedies of many nations, the horror of children ripped from desperate families and our nations brutal response to the needs of others. It is beyond painful to witness the systematic dismantling of all the progressive, human values decades in the making.
Hazy, hot and another storm gathering steam. I am overwhelmed by Trump news, Catholic news, World news and the chaos of unrelenting change.
Chaos has invaded my mind. I walk along the rivers East and West, watching every sunset and moon rise as though it were the last.

Yet life goes on in the new growth from a rescued Orchid.
A baby pigeon waits for mother on the tip of thls roof.
Rudbeckia  bloom profusely.

Horse
I've recently returned to another abandoned old drawing,
attaching images and adding marks.

 *
A long time friend sent this card recently.
It is by Franz Marc (1880 to 1916)
Today
More marks to come and I'm writing a text I'll print in the open spaces. I seek this imagined companion-horse that first appeared in childhood, returned reincarnated as real events many times through adolescence and into my adult years to the present representing freedom.
I long to ride away

CLARITY

Mild and mostly Sunny days this week in Manhattan
I'm so grateful because I still have to raise the final cash due on the new Air Conditioner installation. You might remember the good old horse died the day after the last heat wave of 2017 and I've been saving a bit out of my little bit monthly for the past many months. I'm hoping to have it in early July if no emergency intervenes.

Meanwhile
Peace and compassion prevail at the Zendo where I sit, walk and sit again in meditation every week
"I had a moment of clarity, saw the feeling in the heart of things, walked out to the garden crying."
Allen Ginsberg
I have lost many friends to hiv/aids and love many still surviving. Most of you have too I'm guessing. This is an article worth the short time it takes to read because what is most needed is understanding and deep compassion. Living with long term disability brought on by love is especially difficult. Educate and advocate. Practice kindness. Care as you would like to be cared for.

Actually, we're all in the same boat.

NEW PHOTOS ON HOLD

LADY LIBERTY SPEAKS FRENCH
(seen at a distance from a water-taxi ride to Ikea in Redhook, Brooklyn, although I was actually headed to a poetry reading at an Irish pub called Rocky Sullivans, a short walking distance further on to hear Oren Ryan read)

I'm enjoying mining the past while waiting for my computer friend/savior to help correct the fact that my picture file migrated to an unknown and inaccessible location.

"The Land of Yesterday"
by Don Marquis

And I would seek the country town
Amid green meadows nestled down
If I could only find the way
Back to the Land of Yesterday!

How I would thrust the miles aside,
Rush up the quiet lane, and then,
Just where her roses laughed in pride,
Find her among the flowers again.
I'd slip in silently and wait
Until she saw me by the gate,
And then . . . read through a blur of tears
Quick pardon for the selfish years.

This time, this time, I would not wait
For that brief wire that said, Too late! --
If I could only find the way
Into the Land of Yesterday.

I wonder if her roses yet
Lift up their heads and laugh with pride,
And if her phlox and mignonette
Have heart to blossom by their side;
I wonder if the dear old lane
Still chirps with robins after rain,
And if the birds and banded bees
Still rob her early cherry-trees. . . .

I wonder, if I went there now,
How everything would seem, and how --
But no! not now; there is no way
Back to the Land of Yesterday.

Elsewhere in the house, this pot which has hung in many places, witnessed many changes, now contains multiple yesterdays in silence.

Let this window stand--better than any words I might choose--for the bright love the place and it's creatures evoke in me.

CHOPIN and COLUMBINE

The Plant
"The botanical name for columbine is Aquilegia, from the Latin word aquilinum--meaning 'like an eagle'--the flower's spurs look like the talons of an eagle. Columbine is from the Latin word 'columba'--meaning dove or pigeon, and the flowers look like birds in flight. The flower has several descriptive folk names that have been used through the years, including cluckies, rock bells, rock lily, granny’s bonnet, fairies dancing and culverwort."
 Propagation
"Seed is best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame. The seed can be slow to germinate. Stored seed can be sown in late winter in a cold frame. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in a cold frame for their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Division in spring."
Folklore and Legend
"Columbine flowers are a symbol of foolishness, because their spur-like petals resemble a court jester’s hat. The spurs look like little shoes with turned-up toes when they fall from the plant, and are called Mary’s shoes. According to the University of Illinois Extension, one legend relates the story of Jesus' mother Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth; everywhere she walked during her visit, columbine sprang from the ground. According to the legend, the columbine represents Mary’s innocence."
 Medicine
"Columbine was formerly employed in herbal medicine mainly for its antiscorbutic effect, but it has fallen out of favour and is little used nowadays. The leaves root and seed are astringent, depurative, diaphoretic, diuretic, parasiticide. Because of its toxic properties, this plant should not be taken internally without expert advice, though the root is sometimes used externally in poultices to treat ulcers and the commoner skin diseases. The plant can be harvested at any time from June to October. Columbine has produced very unsatisfactory results and is not normally used medicinally. A homeopathic remedy is made from the plant. It is used in the treatment of affections of the nervous system."
