On Aging
by Maya Angelou
When you see me sitting quietly,
Like a sack left on the shelf,
Don’t think I need your chattering.
I’m listening to myself.
Hold! Stop! Don’t pity me!
Hold! Stop your sympathy!
Understanding if you got it,
Otherwise I’ll do without it!
When my bones are stiff and aching,
And my feet won’t climb the stair,
I will only ask one favor:
Don’t bring me no rocking chair.
When you see me walking, stumbling,
Don’t study and get it wrong.
‘Cause tired don’t mean lazy
And every goodbye ain’t gone.
I’m the same person I was back then,
A little less hair, a little less chin,
A lot less lungs and much less wind.
But ain’t I lucky I can still breathe in.

A Modern Declaration
by Edna St. Vincent Millay
(shamelessly deleted format)

"I, having loved ever since I was a child a few things, never having wavered In these affections; never through shyness in the houses of the rich or in the presence of clergymen having denied these loves; Never when worked upon by cynics like chiropractors having grunted or clicked a vertebra to the discredit of these loves; Never when anxious to land a job having diminished them by a conniving smile; or when befuddled by drink Jeered at them through heartache or lazily fondled the fingers of their alert enemies; declare That I shall love you always. No matter what party is in power; No matter what temporarily expedient combination of allied interests wins the war; Shall love you always."

FRIDAY ENDS

Tuesday
March 6th 2019
1 a.m
Heats Off
I'm not yet well and just couldn't face rousing our battered Super again so, dosed with 'Theraflu', added another layer of clothes + hat and slept on the timed heating pad under a comforter till 4:30 a.m. when I woke shivering, got up, plugged my expensive-to-run electric radiator in set on high, still averse to being the one to call. Why? Don't quite know.

Suddenly, this 5 times repeat malfunctioning seems suspicious since the owners occupy three space here too.
Why don't they wake the super?
Do they have their own good heaters keeping them perfectly warm? Their basement apartments are closer to the source so may stay warmer longer.
Are they even actually here? I haven't laid eyes on them for several weeks and know they have other options.
Meanwhile,
my thoughts are turning toward true friends suffering elsewhere.
Let the wicked reap their just rewards. Let younger warriors prevail. I'm too busy growing old, keeping a fragile peace and making do.

Depression Hovers
"Soften. Let thoughts and memories wash through unimpeded and let them go." Then, I took a hot bath and prepared to go out.

7 P.M.
At Tibet House

Krishna das opened with the familiar invocation call and response, Then he and Robert Thurman told potent and amusing stories, including one about the Dalai Lama farting and another about mowing Einsteins lawn.

Last, we all joined in chanting to Tara.
The main Tārā mantra is the same for Buddhists and Hindus alike: oṃ tāre tuttāre ture svāhā. It is pronounced by Tibetans and Buddhists who follow the Tibetan traditions as oṃ tāre tu tāre ture soha. The literal translation would be:
“Om O Tārā, I pray O Tārā, O Swift One, So Be It”

Lovely Incense

(available at Tibet House)

Miracle?
It was a huge effort for me to drag myself out into the cold to attend last night, but felt strongly I needed to be there. After, I walked home in the 20 degree night, my fingers and toes freezing, mumbling the mantra under my breath and thinking all the time how fortunate I am to have a home to go to. I drank a warm bowl of Ginger-Miso soup, mixed up another glass of Theraflu, slid into bed and had the first good 8 hour sleep of the past many being-ill months.

I woke feeling fit, energized and clear, was active all day and got many things done with pleasant ease.

Late in the afternoon, I walked through 'little India" on my way to Trader Joe and stopped in to talk to a friend at a local shop about Tara. She is a long time KD fan who relates to that mantra and more.

View outside my front window three flights up, looking East at 11 O'clock. This sun means business, but cloud cover dominates it's intention. Shall I say that my eight hours of sleep last night was interrupted three times, so not nearly as satisfying or energizing as the previous nights blissfully undisturbed straight eight? Yes.

A 'wandering Jew' wishes for roots.
Patience is the genius of plants.

Accomplishment

After many months of utter neglect, I've sorted out some of the piles, changed my (sick) sheets and comforter and delivered all to the Laundry Service at Street level. These are simply items i can not use my bathtub and buckets method on.

Once every couple of months is par for this old gals course. Dust, a far more serious condition not yet attended to, but as someone remarked somewhere:
'I tried dusting, but it didn't work'
(Ha!)

5 p,m.
Although I would rather sleep again, or distract myself with trivia, media and music, tonight I will go to our Monthly "Wisdom" session at the Zendo with 10--20 'over sixty year olds' where we look at all the aspects of aging; the dark and light of it, life and death issues. Personal sharing occupies some time and is accompanied by a Buddhist perspective and a meditation.

The Heart Sutra
(Thich Nhat Hanh)

Avalokiteshvara, while practicing deeply with the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore, suddenly discovered that all of the five Skandhas are equally empty, and with this realisation
he overcame all Ill-being.

Listen Sariputra,
this Body itself is Emptiness
and Emptiness itself is this Body.
This Body is not other than Emptiness
and Emptiness is not other than this Body.
The same is true of Feelings,
Perceptions, Mental Formations,
and Consciousness.
Listen Sariputra,
all phenomena bear the mark of Emptiness;
their true nature is the nature of
no Birth no Death,
no Being no Non-being,
no Defilement no Purity,
no Increasing no Decreasing.

That is why in Emptiness,
Body, Feelings, Perceptions,
Mental Formations and Consciousness
are not separate self entities.

The Eighteen Realms of Phenomena
which are the six Sense Organs,
the six Sense Objects,
and the six Consciousnesses
are also not separate self entities.

The Twelve Links of Interdependent Arising
and their Extinction
are also not separate self entities.
Ill-being, the Causes of Ill-being,
the End of Ill-being, the Path,
insight and attainment,
are also not separate self entities.

Whoever can see this
no longer needs anything to attain.

Bodhisattvas who practice
the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore
see no more obstacles in their mind,
and because there
are no more obstacles in their mind,
they can overcome all fear,
destroy all wrong perceptions
and realize Perfect Nirvana.

All Buddhas in the past, present and future
by practicing
the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore
are all capable of attaining
Authentic and Perfect Enlightenment

Therefore Sariputra,
it should be known that
the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore
is a Great Mantra,
the most illuminating mantra,
the highest mantra,
a mantra beyond compare,
the True Wisdom that has the power
to put an end to all kinds of suffering.

Therefore let us proclaim
a mantra to praise
the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore.

Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha!
Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha!
Gate, Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha!

DAYS LIKE YEARS

Old Reliable
Grateful for a place to be warm while cooking up what's available in the larder, with no plans to go out other than down three flights to check mail and deposit trash. These old familiars have a welcoming touch but no traction on ice or snow. I've a beautiful new pair of fancy boots with good traction, but nothing beats the old familiars for comfort. Same is true of relationships, books, films, music, food and places to be.

Okay, So...

The weather's been a non stop roller-coaster and the ice storm was treacherous, our Federal Government continues to be under threat of another shut-down for the sake of the overblown ego requiring a wall, those stolen border children separated from family are still missing, the polar ice caps are melting faster, California fires remain a constant concern, most Countries are trying to find leaders or lose them and anyone who can wield power in order to rule the roost, will.
 Post Script
Yup, the very next day a National Emergency was declared at the end of a series of diversions and evasions by painful Presidential Press conference reporting that:
"everything's going very well"
Denial
I might be overwhelmed, but I refuse to run screaming through the streets, simply settle for being eccentrically unstable, physically fragile, passively grieving and nestled in sporadic semi-denial.

Everything Changes

Now, I'm adding on that my old answering machine, which is tethered to the only telephone I own (a land line), has given up it's ghost, malfunctioned permanently. Alerted to the fact by friends, I dragged out the dusty manual and tried to get my previous settings programmed back, but nothing worked. I was pricing new ones via google, when a blogger friend who is moving and dumping things, offered to mail me one she is abandoning. Meanwhile, since I can no longer screen calls, I'm asking friends to let it ring six times. If I'm home and conscious, I'll answer. If asleep or out, I turn the ringer off.
Post Script
Days later, a neighbor phoned and left a message!
Apparently some of the reprogramming took, but no date or time can be set. Still, that's progress. Must ask if the number of rings was three.   ~*~

Heat Loss
Woke shivering at 3 a.m-Roused the Superintendent who got up and reset. It will take another 15 minutes before it can build pressure to push warmth into the pipes to the 6th floor in three attached buildings. I have my old electric heater on and am dressed in layers. Will be glad for the relief. Old bones need the warmth. When it's working well I'll unplug the electric. Temperature in the twenties but feels colder.

  4:30 Aha....just heard clicking.
Maybe I can get some sleep.

 SUPER MOON

4 a.m.

When the Snow Moon becomes officially full on Tuesday Feb.19 at 10:53 a.m. EST (1553 GMT), it will be about six hours past perigee and will be at its closest at 4:07 a.m. EST (0907 GMT). Although it's officially "super" on the 19th, it will still look pretty full (and super!) to the casual observer the night before and after.

This Snow Moon will rise on 2.19 at 5:46 p.m. and set the next morning at 7:35 a.m. local time. To figure out when it will rise and set from your location go to the site:
