Spirit Muse Sunday WHEN THAT MIGHTY SPIRIT MOVES

The Spirited Move Too

October 21 2011
92 year old Pete Seeger marched down Broadway to Occupy Columbus Circle in solidarity for the 99% Occupy Wall Street movement.
David Amram, Arlo Guthrie, and Tao Chapin sang
"This Little Light of Mine"
Odetta was there too
In spirit.

October 22 2011
Every time I think of Pete Seeger, I think about the past,
my past.

At 16 years, I was listening to folk music
because A girl I admired played the guitar and sang.
Mirium Mekeba, Joan Baez, Mimi Farina,
and Odetta moved me.

1958
This is the first song I ever heard Odetta sing.
I learned it by heart.

 Then These Two
'The Midnight Special'
slides right into
'This Little Light Of Mine'
Which is what they sang at Columbus circle last night .

 Last Word: Odetta
The entire video Documentary from The New York Times
Runs approximately 18 Minutes
here

"If only one could be sure that every fifty years
a voice and a soul like Odetta's would come along,
the centuries would pass so quickly and painlessly
we would hardly recognize time."
-Maya Angelou-

I listened to some folk music 'back then' but mostly classical music. I've probably heard music by Odetta but did not know her by name.

by Naomi Klein in the 10/31 issue of the Nation. were the words she
gave to Occupy on Oct 6. it's
called The Most Important Thing In
The World

I'm back. I watched the last word but could not figure out the songs you posted :(
I listened to a bunch of her stuff over at youtube...and Pete, ahh Pete. And Mahalia.
The I got curious and dug around and pulled out some of my mama's old records of Mahalia and Odetta and Barbara Dane: Trouble in Mind and Ledbelly: Rock Island Line and Marian Anderson: Spirituals and Pete (of course)...

Been bouncing around on youtube listening. Wish I had a record player, still. One day.
Dang my mom was cool! :)
