HOT HOLDING PATTERN

SUNDAY
On a divider
2nd Avenue at 24th Street
.
Somehow it has been maintained here for many years.
Prettiest patch on the block and each time I spot it,
my heart beat is enlivened and I feel energized.

Sunflowers are either annual which need to be replanted every year, or perennial that seeds itself. Here's how to know:

MONDAY
Hand dyed walnut and tin can cotton cloth
'Benevolent Sun with her Yogi Moon"
Heat and Humidity
Continues unabated. In the nineties again today and factoring in the heat index, it will feel like the 100s.

In addition, since all the air conditioners are on and blowing hot air out to the streets,

the temperature is 10-20 degrees hotter at street level and at least 10 stories up the canyons of all the sky stealing,

light blocking buildings that have taken over our City with its increasing homeless population and it's diminishing affordable housing stock. Not complaining, just saying. I'm most fortunately comfortable in 77 degree energy saving conditioned air and since I'm on a call list, I received my usual morning phone-robot messaged warning from Con Edison alerting me to make provisions for my safety in case the grid fails. All's well for the time being. Tonight I meditate at the zendo, practicing patience and steadfastness in preparation for systems failures. I may not be able to control the circumstances of my surroundings, but I can devote time and focus to work at increasing the effectiveness of my responses.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Remembered tonight at my Zendo

"Whoever you are: step out of doors tonight,
Out of the room that lets you feel secure.
Infinity is open to your sight.
Whoever you are.
With eyes that have forgotten how to see
From viewing things already too well-known,
Lift up into the dark a huge, black tree
And put it in the heavens: tall, alone.
And you have made the world and all you see.
It ripens like the words still in your mouth.
And when at last you comprehend its truth,
Then close your eyes and gently set it free."

'Entrance' by Rainer Maria Rilke
Translation:  Dana Gioia

are either an annual (where they need to be replanted every year) or a perennial (where they will come back every year from the same plant) and telling the difference is not that hard if you know how.
