CALM RETURNS JOY RISES

Tuesday
8.4.2020
11:15 p.m.
The storm passed as all things do. The air returned to warm and I slept a while. We never lost power. Lucky. Only a few branches and foliage fell and were immediately swept up by police personnel. The second night of this full 'sturgeon' moon rose and calm prevails here, though I know there was much damage elsewhere thanks to face book friends, but no serious injuries in my circle. Caring thoughts for those in the storms track who lost much, were injured or died.

BLACK FRIDAY

"The most commonly repeated story behind the post-Thanksgiving shopping-related Black Friday tradition links it to retailers."
"As the story goes, after an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would supposedly earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise. Though it’s true that retail companies used to record losses in red and profits in black when doing their accounting, this version of Black Friday’s origin is the officially sanctioned—but inaccurate—story behind the tradition."
"The first recorded use of the term “Black Friday” was applied not to holiday shopping but to financial crisis: specifically, the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. Two notoriously ruthless Wall Street financiers, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, worked together to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold, hoping to drive the price sky-high and sell it for astonishing profits. On that Friday in September, the conspiracy finally unraveled, sending the stock market into free-fall and bankrupting everyone from Wall Street barons to farmers."

Not Shopping
Most of us will always have plenty to do so long as we have some energy, imagination and curiosity: art projects, home and personal maintenance, time with friends and family, or just walking out in the world. Reading, naps and meditation are free and freeing.

Full Moon
The precise time of the full moon is 05:39 P.M., although it's set to be impressive through the night as it rises in the east after the sun sets.

Tuesday
Sunshine came and went. I did fifty or more little domestic things around the apartment, made some changes to a drawing in process, cooked and prepped meals for several days and when the rain started again around midnight, I went for a neighborhood constitutional.

Friday
When news of the wide world wearies
When my whirling spirit runs out of steam
I take to my bed for relief, let go of queries,
despairs and self pity, 'things aren't only just what they seem.'

"These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep."

CHRISTMAS GIFTS

1945
Momentous events swirled around us that Christmas, and though I may not have known what they were then, I absorbed feelings, read distress or calm in gestures, and heard it in tones of voice
as all children do.

These stand out:
January 20th, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated to a 4th term as President of the United States.  April 4th, American troops liberated their first Nazi death camp in Germany.  April 12th, President Roosevelt died suddenly at Warm Springs, Georgia and Vice President Harry Truman became the 33rd President.  On August 6th, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, and on August 9th dropped a second one on Nagasaki.  August 14th Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender on the radio, signaling that the second World War was officially over.  In a lighter vein, on October 29th the first ballpoint pens went on sale for $12.50 each at Gimbels Department Store in New York City, and one warm June day,
I received my first one after kindergarten graduation.

1949

1963
(a guess, but definitely early sixties)
Learned this poem by heart to perform a recitation for family and friends as my gift to them that year, and much later, in my sixties, I repeated it for my Massachusetts friends but needed the script for some parts.  Here is the poet himself recorded February 22, 1952 at Steinway Hall in New York.

This little book, a tender tale about the passage of time, came from my old friend and Visual Arts classmate, Theresa.  It emerges from my Christmas Box to join the figurine each year.

FULL MOON IN AQUARIUS TONIGHT

 by Neal Young

The whole sweet album from a very different decade.  He was kinda' an old man even when young

I've grown more comfortable with the pace than I was when I was twenty something and in a hurry for the dance.  Its simple, and slow like me.  A bit of a  rhythmic shuffle's just fine.  I'm in no big hurry these days, and I really appreciate a vocal caress, with some toe-tapping spirit thrown in.
Hope you will too.
