ACTIVISM REVISITED

1980
2,000 women surrounded the Pentagon
Washington, DC
"Four huge female puppets created by Bread and Puppet Theater led some 2,000 women in a march past Arlington Cemetery to the Pentagon. There they encircled the building, put gravestones in the lawn, wove yarn across the entrances to symbolically reweave the web of life, and created rituals of mourning and defiance by chanting, yelling, and banging on cans. Over 140 women were arrested for blocking the doors at two entrances. They also blocked the Mall entrance, but no arrests were made there. Most arrestees pled "no contest" and were immediately sentenced to 10 days for first offenders or 30enders who received longer sentences were shackled at the wrists, waist, and ankles and immediately sent 300 miles to a federal prison for women."

LET THE WORLD

Too lazy to be ambitious,
I let the world take care of itself.
Ten days' worth of rice in my bag;
a bundle of twigs by the fireplace.
Why chatter about delusion and enlightenment?
Listening to the night rain on my roof,
I sit comfortably, with both legs stretched out.
-Taigu Ryokan-
...and then they slept, and the timer turned the television off, and
the night went on it's way to day, and the planet rotated, and
the galaxies did whatever they needed to, and so did you,
and so it goes.

TODAY

Today is the designate official 'Mothers Day', yet every day is Mothers day so long as women bear children  Would that it were universally so.  However, women are, and have always been our least honored resource world wide, and mothers, our least supported natural asset.  If I could speak to my own departed mother what would I say?
Thank you.  Yes, thank you for my life.  I know it wasn't an easy birth, nor was I an easy child, easy adolescent or easy adult.  I know the hard details of your life before me and the rest of your life too.  But just now, right now, it's all simply memories, fading photographs, and mist.  I know we both did our best, so from this distance, I'm waving at you with love, unconditional and true.

DADDYS DICTIONARY

A child, I used to win spelling B's.  Then
spell-check wiped away all I'd learned by rote
'till even words seemed interchangeable
 although I know
they're not.
If I were to lose the internet one day
would I be swept back to
1937
 with yellowing vision
like the pages of this book
falling apart at it's seams, only
saved because you signed it?
What would I do without Google search
now I've become it's fool, Daddy?
