ON and ON and ON

Sunday
3.22.2020
The day stretched out
Then shrunk to evening

5:30 p.m.
Manhattan View Eastward as the 'ongoing' goes on. Cool, clear air drifts through my rooms three flights up from deserted City Streets and the little dog who lives below barks for his absent companion.

7 p.m
Church bells tolled at 6 and news on the radio reminded me that our Administration is actively defending itself with promises of protecting all of us and tightening the rules more.

The Weighing
by Jane Hirshfield

The heart’s reasons
seen clearly,
even the hardest
will carry
its whip-marks and sadness
and must be forgiven.

As the drought-starved
eland forgives
the drought-starved lion
who finally takes her,
enters willingly then
the life she cannot refuse,
and is lion, is fed,
and does not remember the other.

So few grains of happiness
measured against all the dark
and still the scales balance.

The world asks of us
only the strength we have and we give it.
Then it asks more, and we give it.

Supper Time

Midnight Stroll
 Bought Incense.
 walked twenty blocks.
looked up at blooming trees.

What a long week it seemed.
I wonder what this next will feel like.
Months? We shall see.
