Mammalian Muse
Highly Social
Some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups which are the most stable of any animal species. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations, have been described as manifestations of culture.
We have, because of our human-centric point of view, dubbed them 'Killer Whales". I wonder if they think of us as "Killer Humans", ignoring the complexity of our being, as we ignore the complexity of theirs.
Find out more about these amazing creatures.

Captives occasionally act aggressively towards themselves, their tank mates, or humans, which critics say is a result of stress. Tilikum, a captive killer whale born in the wild, has been involved in three fatalities including one in which he grabbed a trainer and pulled her underwater, eventually drowning her. Read about him, who he is, how and where he was captured, and where he is forced to live and perform.

Experts are divided as to whether the injuries and deaths caused by captive orca whales have been accidents
or deliberate attempts to cause harm.
Wild orca whales travel up to 160 kilometres (100 mi) each day,
and critics say that the animals are too big and intelligent
to be suitable for captivity.
Our wanton pollution of the oceans of the world has a great deal to do with whether or not whales, dolphins and other sea creatures
will remain a part of our world in the future.
will remain a part of our world in the future.

A Personal Note
I should say that some of my posts deal with dark, difficult material,
and, since I often construct and schedule them in advance,
they do not reflect my spirits of the day they post.
In general, despite the sometimes distressing materials I post,I am an optimist, and operate on the simple presumption
that people are essentially good,
given the chance and circumstance to exhibit that capacity.
Nature itself is neither good nor evil.

An email I received today
I visited your blog this morning for the first time and was delighted to read about your time away from the rat-race and about orca behaviors. I didn’t realize that Orcas have live in such complex, matrilineal societies. It makes me wonder about other kinds of whale pods. The information you provided also puts a new light on the use of Orcas for entertainment. It’s heart-breaking to think that such sophisticated animals are forced to live - often alone - in small tanks so that people can get a few minutes of entertainment.
I also have to thank you for including some of Confucius’ philosophies; to me they can never be repeated too many times. Many bloggers just reflect on headline news or celebrity gossip, but it’s clear that you put a lot of yourself into your writing.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
