On this day
in 1431
Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen, France.
In 1456
a posthumous retrial was held at which she was exonerated.
In 1920
she was canonized a Catholic saint.

"The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc
by the Suir Luis de Compte"

Mark Twain gave nine years of his life to this,
and thought of it as his best work.
It was published anonymously, at Twain's request, as a serialization in Harpers magazine beginning in 1895,
and as a book in 1896.
