EVERYTHING is the DHARMA

Sunday
November 10th 2019
'Hanging Out in the Heart Space'
with Krishna Das and Friends
at
Dharma Mittra Yoga Center
Video will be available sometime soon, so here is one 18 minute selection from a Kirtan I was present for in 2017. I recommend full screen and earphones for the best experience. Just remember it's a waltz.

Note
I am still camera disabled and finding it tiresome. I've been mining old photos and posting at Face book. Hope to get the snafu cleared soon.

Monday
November 11th
Armistice Day
"Commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France at 5:45 am, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. But, according to Thomas R. Gowenlock, an intelligence officer with the U.S. First Division, shelling from both sides continued for the rest of the day, only ending at nightfall. The armistice initially expired after a period of 36 days and had to be extended several times. A formal peace agreement was only reached when the Treaty of Versailles was signed the following year."
The 'war to end all war' was a blood bath of immense proportions. Yet, as we know, it did not end war.
I was at home all day, a warmish one, windows open and air circulating through the space here while I accomplished a few small domestic tasks. Meanwhile our President was speaking encased in bullet proof glass at Madison Square Park a few blocks away to kick off the veterans march. I did'nt even listen on line. What could he possibly have to say.
In the evening, I made my way across town to the Zendo for a meditation and Dharma talk. The magic of 'be here now' is always reliable, curative and refreshing.

Full Moon Tuesday
November 12th
An image from the past and other than the landscape, similar to the moon over Gramercy park as I took my late night walk around, kicking through piles of fallen Ginko leaves. Now, way past midnight, Wednesday arrives to a clinking heat pipes serenade as I light votive candles for family and friends and for all those unknown others that they may be at ease of heart.

KIRTAN and KIRTANA

I would explain, but It would involve writing personal history about how I was thrust into the community of yogis and chanters. I simply can't. I just haven't got the energy. It's too long a tale and would require too many words, coherent sentences, time-line details to reconstruct for accuracy and it was too important to me to just toss it off. Suffice it to say, I arrived in psychic despair one day a few decades ago. Now, I just plug back in when they're in town and I can attend. Saturday night, suitably dressed for thirty degree temperatures, I left my apartment and walked uptown, caught this shot of the Empire State  building lit red white and blue for Veterans day...Oh, weary, weary wars we are exhausted...
...then walked East to the 'speed-bus' at 26th street on 1st Avenue. Once boarded,  I watched this elder Chinese man read about eight different Chinese newspapers, carefully unfolding and refolding them throughout the whole trip to 86th Street.
Another bus took me across 86th Street and I arrived around 8 O'clock to a full house in various stages of ecstasy at the Church of St. Paul & St. Andrew.

Kirtan is a Sanskrit word that means "narrating, reciting, telling, describing" of an idea or story. It also refers to a genre of religious performance arts, connoting a musical form of narration or shared recitation. With roots in the Vedic anukirtana tradition, a Kirtana is a call-and-response style song or chant, set to music, wherein multiple singers recite or describe a legend, or express loving devotion to a deity, or discuss spiritual ideas. It may include dancing or direct expression of bhavas (emotive states) by the singer. Many Kirtana performances are structured to engage the audience where they either repeat the chant, or reply to the call of the singer.
"How good it is when Brother and Sisters
dwell together in harmony"
Sometime around 10 O'clock we broke up, mulled about meeting and greeting while the band packed equipment. It was a loving 'family' gathering, as it is all over the world at like events. Friend Wendy Daly and I left together and made our way, she to a new night shift job and me, back to my apartment where I uploaded the fuzzy and clear photos to my computer, downed some fine soup and fell into bed feeling loved and loving, fortunate and grateful.

Thursday
Weather has turned Cool and the Wind is wonderful. Windows open, waking early. My fourteen year old Air Conditioner has been diagnosed and judged not worth saving, Instead, I'm saving for a new one same model which I may be able to install in January of February. I'm praising the corpse for lasting so long despite diminishing ability, offering gratitude for soldiering on and getting me through one more Summer.

Incident, Care Package, Garden Visit, Poetry Event
On The Front Steps an Elderly fellow, not drunk or stoned, just tired and a bit disoriented,  On their own two police from across the street made him move along.  As he left, wearily making his slow way, limping to Second Avenue, I found myself speculating  about him.  He seemed confused.  Alzheimer?  Perhaps he was lost and just wore himself out.
The police should have asked him if he knew where he was, where he was going.
I wish I had.
Then the Care Package I was waiting for arrived
direct from my dear Massachusetts friends
Delivered via Jeremy Scanlon and Richard Loder
Here on a mission of mercy to retrieve important items
for another friend who is hospitalized and extremely ill.
The bounty began with fragrant lily of the valley
fresh picked before dawn.
Continued with home-made, home-grown Quince Jelly,
Basil Pesto and Massachusetts Maple Syrup
White Cheddar Cheese and Quinoa Pasta
 Not Yogurt
A quart of Jennifer Scanlon's very special Chili
 Best Flax Crackers
A loaf of Jeremy's hearty Oat/Spelt Bread and
Jennifer's to-die-for Lemon Loaf Cake
Once the food was stored, I walked over to the garden
Ah, the Iris!
Late Afternoon

Headed downtown to the Metric Poetry Season Finale
Featured poets were Alicia Stallings from Greece, Sam Gwynn from Texas, Claudia Gary from Washington D.C and Janice Soderling from Sweden.  The house was packed and the reading super fine.  Shot just a few photographs:
David katz and John Marcus Powell
 Walter A.
Quincy Lehr, John Marcus Powell, and R. Nemo Hill,
with Sam Gwynn talking to someone out of frame.

At home again
Across the street cops made food for other cops on duty, while a heckler challenged them--first just by his presence and stare. then talking loud on his cell phone to his Mother.  They ignored him.  He heated up, threw insults, demanded to be arrested, called them 'cowards', 'pussies', and much worse. Cops came and went in and out of the precinct as he persisted.  It went on for at least an hour at varying levels and they did nothing.  Finally he left.  Later I spoke with them, said I admired their restraint.  They know him.  He's a regular.

The teaching within the "Art of War" by Lau Tsu
is the skill of prevention.
At 7:30 I strolled down Irving place to Shades of Green Pub where the 'Saturn Series featured poets Babette Albin and Robert Kramer as well as open readers.  I read a new Poem.
